Coin Currency In Ancient Greece
If you are staying in Athens, there is much to be said for taking a day out and visiting the ancient sites of Mycenae and Epidauros, then stop at Nafplio before heading back to the capital. You can drive there yourself, or hire a taxi for a day. This is not as expensive as it sounds, especially if there are three or four people who want to go on the trip. The advantages are that you can take your time and not be hurried by a tour guide if something interests you. Tour guides can be hired at the sites, and your taxi driver will probably be a mine of information.
The Ancient Theatre of Epidauros is a World Heritage Site
On the drive from Athens you will have spectacular views of the Gulf of Argolis, and there is a convenient parking place from which you can take photos. There are places to stop for refreshment on the drive down to Epidauros, and the modern town of Epidauros has many eateries.
The theatre is set in the middle of a pine forest, which was threatened by fires in 2007; luckily the whole site was saved. The area in which the theatre is located is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and was dedicated to the god of medicine, Asklepios, the son of Apollo. The theatre and hospital as well as the shrine were built in the 4th century AD on an earlier site which had been dedicated to the god Apollo.
